When I originally started on Saurfang Oceanic, my intent was to play with a former colleague. I never saw him once on the server and he ended up quitting once his job situation was settled. So I ended up getting stuck more or less on the server. However, it was a PVE server and something I wasn’t used to. Having been on the brutal Ner’zhul zone, the Oceanic server seemed initially like a more relaxing environment.
To be honest, it was for the most part. After I booted my old guild master for being inactive, I killed the old guild and switched all my toons to a new guild. Originally, I thought things were fine since we actually had people, as opposed to my previous guild which was deader than Hulk Hogan’s career. But there was something amiss. No raids, no guild activities.
As the patches rolled in, I noticed how the guild gradually became inactive. People were booted for not logging into the game for months while others would quit after some period. Eventually, when we hit level 25 as a guild, people started to come in again but it was painfully obvious that they were only in it for the guild benefits. There were a few decent players who passed through but all of them would grow bored and either quit or do some other activity.
Fast forward to now. At this stage, the game is quite….dead. At least the horde side on my server. It really feels as if there are only a few really active guilds on the server and the vast majority of people on the horde side are truly pathetic players. I’m not talking just new players but everything. Zero desire to improve, no sense of faction pride, no communication and a lot of trading barbs between people.
Then things started to really open up in front of me as we attempted to do Galleon. Once again, the horde side was extremely slow to get a group together. Just as we hit the area near Galleon, the allies already tagged it. As soon as that happened, people just stayed in the air as if waiting for something to happen. I said fuck it and decided to gank some tagged allies. A few others did the same. But most people just dropped group or ran away. Or better yet, not even bothered to show up and wanted a port because they couldn’t be bothered taking a small portal trip from town to Pandaria.
When I tried getting a group together the previous day for Galleon, some idiot blood elf lowbie hunter insulted me. But I have a feeling that’s the typical attitude of the horde on this server. Complete apathy and perhaps even disdain for one another. Outside of the Sha and Galleon kills, few every bother to group up for anything. You could yell into the air and hear crickets.
The thing about a game like this is that there’s a people requirement. If you lack people, it’s a real hard game to have fun in. Sure you can solo content but it’s not as fun (nor efficient) as having others do stuff with you. But the game is even more discouraging when those around you lack the desire to participate in anything.
My guild is definitely guilty in this regards. I often implore people in the guild to join up for Sha and Galleon encounters but I never hear any response except from my friend Kazimir. It’s really sad. It feels as though people fear socialization. But I found that to be the case only on the horde side. I rolled an ally toon and thought that the opposite faction was far more social and friendly. Looking at how fast the allies group up for these kills make me realize that I’m on the wrong faction for this server.
I’m guessing that the vast majority of players on my server are super casuals, noobs or people who want quiet. I can understand to a degree but it makes the game horribly boring when there’s no one to do anything with.
At this stage, I’m very close to realm transferring again. I already have a realm picked out (Stormreaver). While it’s a PVP server, I have a guild lined up whom I know and have done stuff with already. The only reason I stay on Saurfang is just one friend. But that’s not enough at the end of the day.
