Diablo 4: Spiritborn Quill Volley Eagle Class/Build Review

After becoming frustrated with the Dance of Knives Rogue build (which may have a bug as per an upcoming patch will fix), I decided to cave in and roll a Spiritborn class. In reading various write ups and watching a few streams, I came to the conclusion that the top build would be the Quill Volley Eagle build. While there is another bulid revolving around Evade, that build is getting fixed in the upcoming aforementioned patch which implies that Quill Volley Eagle will remain the top build. And my current assessment: it is a great basic build.

The big thing with Spiritborn is that the class currently is considered “overtuned”. Part of the issue is a “bug” involving the legendary paragon node called Vicious Shield, which causes the barrier to pile up quickly and give the character a mound of damage (and probably defense). Even before selecting this node, the build does very good damage. There’s a few key Aspects like Rebounding which pretty much enables the build. The other major piece is the Rod of Kepeleke which turns Quill Volley into a Basic skill, which means you can just spam it. The Rod does take the damage down a little but other Aspects, etc.

Now, one thing that I refuse to use is the Jacinth Shell. It feels awful and very gimmicky where you compromise massive cooldown reduction with losing life. I imagine that a way to counteract this item’s negative side would be life per second, which isn’t great since the life drain is by percentage. So I just use a normal chest and am actively searching for a Tyrael’s Might. Also, I know that Jacinth Shell isn’t a must-have because the BiS piece is the Tyrael’s Might.

Generally speaking, I have most of the pieces/aspects needed and am farming for Ancestrals. I have all my Glyphs leveled up to 20 so my next major goal will probably be pushing them higher as well as finding a better Rod of Kepeleke that hopefully will have the GA on the resource affix. So I’ll need to farm a LOT of boss materials.

What I am waiting for is the patch which is scheduled for Thursday. There’s going to be some major positive changes that I’m looking forward to such as changes to the seasonal event, the Undercity, even to Dance of Knives. So I’m avoiding a few things that may get impacted like Undercity (I found a Unique Tribute and don’t want to waste it until the patch goes out) Until then, I want to mostly focus on Glyph leveling, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons (yes, I like these) and the occasional Infernal Horde.

But going back to the Quill Volley class, so far I haven’t had any major issue with any content. Getting into T2 was quite easy. T3 might be more difficult because my resistances and armor are going to get borked. My only issue with the build is that it’s a little spammy. My hand does hurt because I’m alternating in click between Rock Splitter and Quill Volley. But I might be doing this build slightly wrong because The Hunter Ultimate currently is not incorporated. So I might modify this build tomorrow.

One of my goals though in using this build is to try farming ladder bosses a lot more. By doing that, I hope to get more runes to hopefully upgrade into a legendary one. Because they removed the ability to convert 4 Sparks into a Mythic, it’s MUCH harder to grind out deterministically the Mythic you really need. And generally, I’m seeing that T3 is being blocked by resistances, armor and damage reduction where a Tyrael’s Might helps out a lot. With this build (and others), the compromise is using a Rakanoth’s Wake for the high All Resistance values. Getting an Ancestral version helps by allowing one to try and Masterwork the All Resistance twice. Even right now, my resistances are slightly off because I’m lacking the double Masterwork on All Resistance. Mostly, I compromise in harder content through Incense.

Regardless, I’m hoping that I can get to at least T3 with this build. I might try to farm out a better rolled ancestrals tomorrow so I can Masterwork more items. Also, I’ll probably hit the Pit again. Some of the +all resist and +armor should help in the interim. But the main things are just getting better gear.
